What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Updated July 2026 · Reviewed against current engine behaviourGenerative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand more likely to be named, quoted and cited in answers generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. Where SEO optimizes pages to rank in a list of links, GEO optimizes the sources AI engines read — Reddit threads, review sites, Wikipedia, YouTube, trade press and the brand's own site — so the brand appears inside the answer itself.
The distinction matters because buyers increasingly never see a list of links. They ask a question, get one synthesized answer, and act on it. If your brand is in that answer, you exist. If a competitor is, you don't. GEO is the work of changing which of those two happens.
How do AI engines choose what to cite?
AI engines answer questions by retrieving a small set of trusted sources and synthesizing them. Which sources get retrieved is not the same as which pages rank in Google: only about 12% of URLs cited by AI engines appear in Google's top 10 for the same prompt[1].

Engines lean heavily on places where humans compare things in public. Reddit is the most-cited domain across major engines[2], followed by review platforms, Wikipedia, YouTube and established trade press.
Position within a page matters too. Roughly 44% of ChatGPT citations come from the first third of a page's content[3] — engines reward direct answers stated early, not conclusions buried under narrative.
And the citation pool is wide. Even the most-cited domain rarely exceeds 5% of total citations, meaning roughly 95% go to the long tail of ordinary pages[4]. A mid-sized brand can genuinely compete here in a way it cannot in classic search.
What does GEO work actually involve?
GEO has three layers, and honest practitioners do all three:
| Layer | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement | Tracking which engines mention you, for which prompts, citing which pages | Monthly share-of-voice report across five engines |
| Earned citations | Legitimate presence in the third-party sources engines already trust | A genuinely useful comparison in a Reddit thread; a G2 review profile that answers real questions; a trade-press mention |
| Owned-content extraction | Restructuring your own site so engines can lift and quote it | Front-loaded answers, standalone definitions, comparison tables, valid schema markup |
What GEO is not: seeding fake reviews, botting Reddit threads, or prompt-injecting pages. Reddit now uses LLM-based detection against exactly that behaviour and removes it retroactively[5] — and a removed citation is worse than none, because the removal is a trust signal engines can read. We wrote up what survives and what doesn't at Reddit in 2026.
How is AI visibility measured?
The standard metric is share of voice in AI answers: out of the answers engines give to a defined set of buyer prompts, the percentage that mention your brand versus competitors.

In practice, you build a prompt set from questions your buyers actually ask, run it across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews on a schedule, and record three things per answer: was the brand mentioned, was it recommended, and which pages were cited.
Rankings don't appear anywhere in that sentence — that's deliberate. There is no position #3 in a paragraph.
How long does GEO take?
Six to ten weeks before measurable movement, usually. Engines re-crawl and re-weigh sources on their own schedules, and earned placements need to age into the sources engines trust.

Anyone promising AI visibility in days is selling you either something dishonest or something invisible. The three-month minimum on our plans exists because of this physics, not because we like lock-ins.
How much does GEO cost?
In 2026, credible agency retainers run roughly €2,000–5,000+ per month depending on scope: monitoring only at the low end, monitoring plus earned placements in the middle, full management at the top. Redaccel scopes each engagement to your category after a free audit — see Pricing for the plans and what drives the number. In-house is possible too; we lay out that comparison honestly on the same page.
Frequently asked
Is GEO the same as AEO or LLMO?
Effectively yes. GEO (generative engine optimization), AEO (answer engine optimization) and LLMO (large language model optimization) all describe the same discipline: earning presence in AI-generated answers. GEO is the most widely used term in 2026.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No — they overlap about 12%[1] and reward different things. If your buyers still click blue links, keep doing SEO. The full comparison: GEO vs SEO.
Can you guarantee my brand appears in ChatGPT?
No, and nobody honest can — engines are probabilistic and change weekly. What we guarantee is the work (placements, optimization, measurement) and full transparency on whether share of voice is moving.
Does GEO work for small brands?
Often better than SEO does. ~95% of AI citations go to long-tail sources[4], and engines cite the page that answers the question, not the domain with the most authority. A precise answer from a small brand beats a vague one from a big brand more often in AI answers than in Google.
