GEO vs SEO: what's the difference, and which do you need?

Extract redaccel.com · comparison · July 2026

SEO earns a page a position in a ranked list of links; GEO earns a brand a mention inside the AI-generated answer itself. The two overlap far less than most marketers assume: only about 12% of URLs cited by AI engines rank in Google's top 10 for the same prompt[1]. Ranking well no longer implies being cited, and being cited doesn't require ranking at all.

Does ranking #1 in Google get you cited by ChatGPT?

Usually not. The overlap between AI citations and Google's top 10 varies sharply by engine: Perplexity is closest to classic search at roughly 28% overlap, ChatGPT sits around 8%, and Gemini around 9%[1].

The one exception is Google AI Overviews, which by design summarize what Google already ranks.

Everywhere else, engines cite the page that answers the question most directly — wherever it ranks, and often on a domain you don't control, like a Reddit thread or a review site. Reddit alone is the most-cited domain across major engines[5].

When should you prioritize GEO?

When should you keep prioritizing SEO?

Can one agency do both?

Plenty claim to. Our honest scope: Redaccel does GEO — measurement, earned citations, owned-content extraction — and does not sell link-building or technical SEO retainers. Where the disciplines overlap (structured content, schema, front-loaded answers), the same work serves both, and we'll tell you when a problem is an SEO problem we're not the right ones to fix.
