GEO agency vs doing GEO in house: is it worth hiring one?
Hiring a GEO agency is worth it when the pages deciding your category are pages you cannot get onto yourself: other people's lists, Reddit threads, review directories and publishers. Doing it in house is the better call when the gap is mostly on your own site. A good agency does not know a trick you do not; it has the outreach relationships, the measurement set-up and the moderation experience to earn placements on cited pages without getting them removed. Both routes take 6 to 10 weeks to show movement. Written by an agency, bias declared.
Do GEO agencies actually work?
Some do, and the way to tell is simple: ask what they measure and where the placements go. GEO works when a brand gets named on the pages AI engines retrieve for its buyers' questions. That is a measurable thing. In our own tracking, two third-party list articles were cited 562 and 628 times in 30 days for 28 buyer questions, and the agencies on them were the ones the engines named[1]. An agency that gets you onto pages like those works. An agency that sells "AI-optimised content" for your own blog, with no list of target pages and no share-of-voice number, is selling SEO with a new label.
Two honest limits apply to everyone, agency or in house. Engines are inconsistent run to run, so results have to be read as a share over many runs, not one screenshot[2]. And nobody can guarantee a specific citation; the engine decides what to retrieve.
What the work actually is
Before comparing who should do it, be clear what "it" is. GEO breaks into four jobs:
- Measurement. A fixed set of buyer questions, run on several engines daily, with every cited URL logged and the share of answers naming you tracked against competitors.
- Owned pages. Rewriting your site so the engine can quote it: the answer in the first paragraph (ChatGPT takes 44 percent of its citations from the first third of a page[3]), comparison tables, plain definitions, valid schema, crawlers allowed.
- Earned pages. Getting named on the third-party pages the engines already cite: pitching list editors, answering in the cited Reddit threads from accounts with history, completing review directory profiles, placing articles on publishers that get cited in your niche.
- Corrections. Finding the source pages behind wrong or hostile claims and fixing them there.
Jobs 1 and 2 are mostly in-house work. Job 3 is where agencies earn their fee. Job 4 is either.
In house: what it costs and what it is good at
A capable marketer with a tracking tool can run the measurement and the owned-page work. Tracking tools that sample engines daily cost from a few hundred dollars a month for a small prompt set; a spreadsheet and manual runs cost time instead[4]. Rewriting your own pages needs nobody's permission and shows up as soon as the engines re-read them. If your audit shows that the gap is mostly your own site, this is the whole job and you should not hire anyone for it.
Where in-house teams stall is earned placement. Pitching twenty list editors, building real standing in three subreddits, and getting cited publishers to run a piece is slow, relationship-heavy work that most marketing teams cannot staff alongside everything else. Reddit in particular punishes the shortcut: since July 2026 it uses LLM-based detection to remove coordinated promotion, retroactively, and removes about 25,000 spam posts and comments a day[5]. An in-house team learning Reddit on a live brand account learns expensively.
Agency: what it costs and what it is good at
Market GEO retainers typically run $2,000 to $6,000 or more a month; Redaccel engagements typically start around $2,000 a month, priced after the audit by niche[6]. For that you should get the measurement set up and reported monthly, the owned-page rebuild, and above all placements on the cited third-party pages, with a list of which pages and why.
What an agency brings that a hire does not: existing relationships with the editors and publishers that get cited in several niches, accounts and people with real history on the platforms, and the pattern knowledge from running the same measurement across categories, so it knows which page types move answers in yours. The one thing to check hard is moderation discipline. An agency whose Reddit placements get removed has sold you a citation that disappears, which is worse than none.
Side by side
| Job | In house | Agency |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement | Fine with a tracking tool and one owner | Should be included and reported monthly |
| Owned pages | Best done in house; no permission needed | Useful for the audit and the brief; the edits are yours |
| Best-of lists and publishers | Slow; needs outreach time and relationships | The core of the fee |
| Reddit and communities | Risky on a brand account without experience | Worth it only with proven moderation discipline |
| Review directories | Easy to claim; reviews need real customers either way | Can run the asks, cannot invent the reviews |
| Time to movement | 6 to 10 weeks | 6 to 10 weeks |
| Monthly cost | Tool plus a share of a marketer's time | Typically $2,000 to $6,000 or more |
When you should not hire anyone
- You are already named. If the engines recommend you in most runs of most buyer questions, the job is to keep it that way, which is monitoring, not a retainer.
- The gap is your own site. If the cited pages do name you but the engine describes you wrongly, or your site gives it nothing to quote, fix the site first. It is cheaper and faster than any placement.
- Nobody asks AI about your category yet. Some niches still buy through referrals and tenders. Run the buyer questions; if the engines answer with generic advice and no brand names at all, there is no answer to be in yet.
How to decide in one step
Get the audit before the decision. Which engines name you, which name your competitors, and the exact pages behind each answer. If the cited pages are ones you can edit, do it in house. If they are other people's lists, threads and directories, you are choosing between hiring that outreach capacity and buying it. Our audit is free, comes back in 48 hours, and says plainly when you do not need us.
Frequently asked
Is it worth hiring a GEO agency?
When the pages deciding your category are third-party pages you cannot get onto yourself: best-of lists, Reddit threads, review directories and publishers. If the gap is on your own site, do it in house. Run the audit first; it tells you which case you are in.
Do GEO agencies actually work?
The ones that earn placements on the pages AI engines already cite do, and the result is measurable as share of voice on a fixed prompt set. The ones that only write AI-optimised content for your own blog are selling SEO under a new name. Ask for the target page list and the monthly share-of-voice report before signing.
What does a GEO agency cost compared with in house?
Market retainers typically run $2,000 to $6,000 or more a month; Redaccel engagements typically start around $2,000 a month, priced by niche after the free audit. In house costs a tracking tool plus a marketer's time, and the earned-placement work usually stalls there.
How long does either route take to show results?
6 to 10 weeks for measurable movement in share of voice, whoever does the work. Engines re-read sources on their own schedules. Anyone promising movement in two weeks is promising something they do not control.
